The 5 best aquatic activities in Cancun

Aquatwister-Cancun-02

Cancun is well known as a place to have fun, among the many activities on offer the aquatic ones are second to none. That’s why we have compiled for you our five favourite water based activities. We’re sure that whichever ones you choose to do you won’t regret it!

1. MUSA

One of the world’s most unusual museums can be found within walking distance of the Grand Oasis Sens. Cancun’s underwater museum or MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) as it is known locally consists of several groups of sculptures that have been placed on the seabed at the southernmost point of Cancun’s hotel zone, Punta Nizuc. These sculptures can be seen by snorkelling and have the double purpose of being works of art and regenerating the coral reefs. Two more sites can be found at Punta Sam just north of Cancun and off the coast of Isla Mujeres.

2. Aqua Twister

If you’re an adrenaline junkie then Aqua Twister is for you. Hold on tight as this speedboat makes power brake stops, fishtails in the waves and 270 degree spins to leave your heart pumping and your body wanting more. The speedboat has a capacity for 20 people making it the perfect aquatic activity if you’re visiting us as a group.

3. Jungle Tour

Cancun’s Nichupte lagoon is home to many different animals including leopard frogs, iguanas, river turtles and blue crabs. Its mangroves also provide respite for several species of bird. Discover the wonders of the natural world in a two person speedboat making your way through the waterways of the lagoon all the way to the Mesoamerican reef – the world’s second largest coral reef – where you can snorkel and see the colourful flora and fauna of the Caribbean Sea.

4. Whale Sharks

The idea of sharing the water with the world’s largest specie of shark might sound a bit extreme, however these massive creatures are actually harmless. From May to September these sharks migrate to the warm waters of the Mexican Caribbean and can be found swimming near the islands of Isla Mujeres and Holbox where you can take a tour to swim with these tranquil animals for a truly unforgettable experience.

5. Wave Runners

Hire a jet-ski and hit the waves; go for a fun filled ride with your partner or hire two jet-skis and race your friend through the turquoise blue Cancun sea. This aquatic classic is a surefire way to have a good time.

If you would like to do any of these then get in contact with our sister company Caribe Maya for more information www.caribemaya.com.mx/en/tour.

Dotted nearby are several cenotes; natures swimming pools. Some are free to visit while larger ones charge a nominal fee for upkeep.

Tulum10620605_1165276866858060_2330948803775984950_n

Only 20 minutes by car from the Grand Oasis Tulum is the walled city of Tulum, perhaps the most picturesque Mayan archaeological site. Built on a clifftop overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the ruins which date back to 1200 AD include the remains of a castle, temples and palaces. Don’t forget to bring swimwear as taking to the turquoise waters below and looking up at the ruins is a magical experience.

Isla Mujeres isla-mujeres

If Cancun is all about partying then Isla Mujeres is all about relaxing. This island about a 30 minute boat ride from Cancun’s hotel zone is the perfect place to get away from all the hustle and bustle of city life. Pristine beaches, pretty, colourful streets and an all-round relaxed vibe is the order of the day on Isla Mujeres.

Chichen Itza mapping1

About two hours from Cancun by car is the Mayan archaeological site Chichen Itza, one of the ‘New 7 Wonders of the World’. Apart from its most iconic building, the temple of Kulkulcan, this site which dates back to 600 AD also includes cenotes and pelota (Mesoamerican ball game) pitch. Immerse yourself in thousands of years of history and learn some fascinating facts about one of the great ancient civilizations.

Isla Holboxdescarga

A two hour car journey north of Cancun is the village of Chiquilá where you can take a 20 minute ferry ride to the unspoilt island of Holbox. This fishermen’s island is home to thousands of flamingos, pelicans and other exotic birds and creatures, including whale sharks that from June to September migrate to its waters. Visitors can take a tour to swim with these harmless creatures; some excursions include a spot of fishing where the onboard chef will cook the catch of the day.

Olympic Games

Rio-2016

Bringing out the best in us

The Olympic Games are, among many other things, a declaration of unity between people and places. They bring out the best in us both as athletes and spectators; our competitive spirit, fair play, and a chance to show the best version of ourselves in the quest for glory. During the games there are no enemies only rivals. For 19 days in Rio de Janeiro battles will be won and lost, opponents will embrace each other, and Olympic heroes will be born.

x31179246223784719_8The Games are also chapters that mark our history and, when records are broken, show how far we have come as a species. Memories that last a lifetime are made. The opening and closing ceremonies are often remembered fondly, whether it was a colourful affair like Beijing 2008 or imposing like London 2012. These ceremonies have become a major point of reference to the games, with the host nation showcasing its culture, ideas, and passions while providing a message it wants to send the rest of the world in the process.

An unforgettable ceremony

The opening ceremonies have grown rapidly over the years, each trying to outdo the previous one. However, there is one that definitely marked a watershed moment in Olympic inaugurations, one that stood out in the memory due to the sheer spectacle and imagination behind it. We are of course talking about the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, one that fills us at Oasis with pride as the man behind this celebration is none other than our head of entertainment, Spanish director and producer Cuki Pons.

07-MEDITERRANEA

Cuki Pons

Honorary member of the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and successful television and film director, Cuki, as he is affectionately known by his peers, brings to every Oasis show, not only his indisputable talent and imagination, but also the experience of a man that marked a generation that watched that arrow fly over the Olympic cauldron in the most spectacular lighting of the Olympic flame ever seen.

Ceremony after ceremony, every four years people congregate in a stadium somewhere in the world to celebrate the beginning of the Olympic Games, and despite the efforts of talented creative artists and directors, Barcelona 92 continues to be a benchmark for the games; its colours, its machines and structures, the boats, the flamenco and the Mediterranean emotion that ran skin deep.

So the next time you visit us make sure you don’t miss out on the breathtaking shows that the most important entertainment team in the Caribbean offers, because behind each one of them is not only a talented team of dancers, acrobats and make-up artists, but also the flair and wisdom of a man that, without being an athlete, left his mark on the history of the Olympic Games.
